June 28th, 2008 2008 NBA Draft Grades: Miami Heat

Transactions

  • Selected Michael Beasley 2nd overall.
  • Traded two 2009 second round draft picks and cash considerations to Minnesota for the rights to Mario Chalmers (34th overall).
  • Selected Darnell Jackson 52nd overall and traded his rights to Cleveland for a 2009 second round draft pick.

Will Miami take O.J. Mayo? Will they take Jerryd Bayless? Will they trade down?

No.

At the end of the day, all speculation aside, Michael Beasley is a proud member of the Miami Heat. Pat Riley and the gang picked up themselves one of the most gifted offensive players to come out in recent memory, and a terrific complement to Dwyane Wade both short-term and long-term. Miami just got themselves a world-class offensive player, a versatile guy who can play both forward positions, a great rebounder, and one of the best young talents in the entire league. Even so, they didn’t stop there.

The Heat also traded for the rights to second round steal Mario Chalmers, who is a sound young combo guard that fills a big hole on the Miami’s roster.

Add another piece or two via trade or using the MLE, Riles could have himself an Eastern Conference contender as early as 2009.
