The former Miami Heat all-star went door-to-door in Miami, Thursday, delivering 20 families a Thanksgiving meal.

Publix donated the meals that were able to be given out to those families in need. “With the state of our economy, you have individuals that are out of work, that have lost their homes and a lot of them don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Mourning.

Joining Mourning in handed out food was Queen Latifah. “Coach called me up and said this is what we are doing and I know how much he cares about the community, how much he does so this is a blessing for us really, to be able to do this,” said Latifah.

The families were selected through Mourning’s Overtown Youth Center.

Jacqueline Haggins, a recipient of a Thanksgiving meal to give to her eight kids, was speechless. “I really can’t get the words out,” said Haggins.

Warnisha Hall, one of Haggin’s daughters, was also surprised to see Mourning and Latifah at her door. “I was shocked, because I didn’t know she was coming,” said Hall.

Mourning and volunteers have been giving out meals for families in Miami since Tuesday, and has made it an annual event for the past 11 years.

MIAMI (WSVN) — The Miami Heat is showing its support for Habitat for Humanity by sending some major ambassadors from their team to help build a pair of homes in South Florida.

Miami Heat legend Alonzo Mourning and Heat president Pat Riley rolled up their sleeves to help build affordable homes for low income families. On Friday, crews focused on framing and window reinforcement on two Habitat homes located at 18th Avenue and Northwest 63rd Street. One of the homes belongs to Latoya. She said, “This is a wonderful experience, as far as you get to meet new people, you get to participate in the construction of your home, and it’s just an unexplainable feeling.”

Miami Heat president Pat Riley said he is no stranger to using his hands to build things. “I used to build tables, coffee tables, end tables,” he said.

Both Mourning and Riley put in sweat equity for two families who have finally realized their dream of home ownership. “It’s a special moment, anytime we have the opportunity to help change someone else’s life for the better,” said Mourning, “and I’m a strong believer that the reason why God blesses us is to bless others.”

Both homes are expected to be completed within the next three months.

Qualifier: players will be classified under one position even if they played at more than one.

Alonzo Mourning(notes):

Two-time Defensive Player of the Year Alonzo Mourning was the face of the Miami Heat from 1995 to 2002. Mourning holds Heat franchise records for rebounds (4,807), blocks (1,625) and games played (593) and he was also Miami’s all-time leading scorer with 9,459 points before Dwyane Wade(notes) established a new high. The acquisition of Mourning as well as that of Tim Hardaway jump-started a young Heat franchise and catapulted it into the upper-echelon of the NBA. Mourning’s Heat won four straight division titles and established a franchise record with 61 wins in a single season. He finished his career in 2008 with totals of 14,311 points, 7,137 rebounds and 2,356 blocks.

Shaquille O’Neal(notes):

Perennial All-Star center Shaquille O’Neal lifted the Heat to their first and only NBA Championship in 2006. The Heat acquired O’Neal in 2004 and enjoyed the last two 20 point per game seasons of his career. Shaq averaged 19.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 205 games and earned his last two All-NBA First Team selections in Miami. He retired after the 2010-11 campaign with final tallies of 28,596 points, 13,099 rebounds, 3,026 assists and 2,732 blocks.

Rony Seikaly:

The first draft pick in team history, Rony Seikaly was a double-double machine for the Heat from 1988 to 1994. Before Mourning overtook him, Seikaly owned Miami’s all-time rebounding and shot-blocking records with 4,544 and 610 respectively. He won the Most Improved Player award in 1989-90 in the first of five straight double-double campaigns, playing a huge role in Miami’s quick rise from 15 wins in year one to a playoff berth in year four. Seikaly averaged 15.4 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game over the Heat’s first six seasons as a franchise.

Kevin Willis:

Former All-Star center Kevin Willis spent parts of two seasons with Miami in the mid-1990s. Willis bridged the gap from Seikaly to Mourning in the paint for the Heat. He played the last double-double season of his career in Miami and averaged 14.2 points and 10.0 rebounds overall in 112 games. One of the longest-tenured players in NBA history, Willis played 1,424 games from 1984 to 2007 and amassed 17,253 points and 11,901 rebounds.

Jermaine O’Neal(notes):

Current Boston Celtics center Jermaine O’Neal had a brief run with the Heat before joining his current franchise. O’Neal was a six-time All-Star for the Indiana Pacers, then briefly played for the Toronto Raptors before joining the Heat in a midseason trade in 2009. He recorded 13.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 97 games with Miami. O’Neal ranks seventh among active players in blocks with 1,659 through 886 games.

‘Zo claims total innocence in the matter, but the Florida Highway Patrol doesn’t seem to agree, and they’ve charged the Miami Heat exec with leaving the scene of a car accident. From the Herald: “Former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, a second-degree misdemeanor, for his part in a traffic crash last week, the Florida Highway Patrol said Monday. He also was cited for failure to leave his driving and contact information, FHP said. ‘Our investigation is complete,’ FHP spokesman Sgt. Thomas Pikul said … The announcement doesn’t close the case. The charges against Mourning will move into court, where Mourning can plead or fight the charges. He also remains one of several people named in a civil suit filed on behalf of the man whose car he hit.”

MIAMI — —

Miami Heat executive Alonzo Mourning was cited on Monday by the Florida Highway Patrol for leaving the scene of a crash, a misdemeanor, earlier this month.

The retired basketball star was driving west at 3:07 a.m. July 17 on State Road 112 at Biscayne Boulevard in Miami. The road was obstructed by a previous crash between an Audi A4 and a Chevrolet Impala that Mourning came upon with his wife Tracy, according to a Highway Patrol report.

The report said the car driven by Mourning, 41, of Coral Gables, struck the Audi that had been driven by William Candalerio, 21, of North Miami. Mourning’s 2010 Porsche Panamera S had an estimated $10,000 in damage.

Candalerio’s car had an estimated $11,000 in total damage: $6,000 from the first crash with the Chevy, and $5,000 from Mourning’s Porsche, Sgt. Thomas Pikul of the Highway Patrol said.

Mourning got out of his car and checked on Candalerio and the driver of the Chevy, the report states. He left the scene, notified the Highway Patrol about the incident and was told to return to the crash site, according to the agency.

Alcohol was not a factor in either crash, investigators said.

In addition to the misdemeanor charge, Mourning was cited for leaving the scene without giving information, which could mean a fine and points on his license, Pikul said. He will receive a notice to appear in court before a hearing officer.

Candalerio was cited for careless driving in the first crash, an infraction that can bring a fine or enrollment in traffic school. Pikul said he can also request a court hearing.

A personal injury lawyer for Candalerio announced last week that he was suing Mourning for negligence.

“On behalf of Mr. Candalerio, we are doing our own investigation and accident reconstruction as to what happened,” attorney Spencer Aronfeld said. “The charge against him is irrelevant and inadmissible in a civil lawsuit.”

Aronfeld said he is seeking witnesses to the incident.

“We’re not trying to destroy Mr. Mourning’s reputation,” Aronfeld said. “We respect him and recognize he is an important part of South Florida’s community.”

The Chevy driver, Sony Desir, of North Miami Beach, was treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital and released the same morning, Pikul said, and he was not cited in the crash with Candalerio.

Neither Candalerio nor Mourning was treated for crash injuries by responders to the scene, Pikul said.

Aronfeld said Candalerio, a student, was treated at Aventura Hospital and has returned to classes and his job at a book store.

An attorney for Mourning could not immediately be reached for comment.

MIAMI (Reuters) – Florida authorities cited former NBA player Alonzo Mourning on Monday with leaving the scene of a car crash that occurred as he was driving home from Miami Heat star Chris Bosh’s wedding.

Mourning had played for the Heat. His 2010 Porsche Panamera S struck a car blocking a Miami Beach roadway as the result of a prior collision early on July 17, said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Thomas Pikul.

No one was in the car Mourning hit, and the crash was deemed “an unavoidable accident,” Pikul said. Mourning checked on the people from the first crash, left the scene and then called authorities to say he had been involved in a collision.

He returned after being advised to do so and provided a statement, Pikul said.

The highway patrol charged Mourning, 41, with a misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, which carries a mandatory court appearance. He also received a related civil citation.

“If he had stayed, this wouldn’t have been an issue,” Pikul told Reuters. “He would have a crash report, and he would have been on his way.”

Alcohol was not a factor in either crash, Pikul said.

The report said the car driven by Mourning, 41, of Coral Gables, struck the Audi that had been driven by William Candalerio, 21, of North Miami. Mourning’s 2010 Porsche Panamera S had an estimated $10,000 in damages.

Candalerio’s car had an estimated $11,000 in total damages: $6,000 from the first crash with the Chevy, and $5,000 from Mourning’s Porsche, Sgt. Thomas Pikul of the Highway Patrol said.

Mourning got out of his car and checked on Candalerio and the driver of the Chevy, the report states. He left the scene, notified the Highway Patrol about the incident, and was told to return to the crash site, according to the Highway Patrol.

Pikul said he can request a court hearing.

Former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning was sued Wednesday over a
weekend traffic crash in Florida that raised questions about
whether he improperly left the scene.

The lawsuit seeking unspecified damages was filed on behalf of
21-year-old William Candelario, who suffered head injuries in the
rollover crash early Sunday near Miami Beach. Candelario said he
has little memory of what happened and his attorney said the
lawsuit is aimed at finding answers.

“The question we have is how, why, would Mr. Mourning leave this
accident?” said attorney Spencer Aronfeld. “We’re not on a witch
hunt trying to destroy one of South Florida’s most respected and
beloved celebrities. We’re simply trying to get answers.”

In a brief interview, Mourning said he came upon the crash scene
but declined to say whether he struck one of the vehicles.

Sgt. Thomas Pikul, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman, said
investigators determined that Mourning’s blue Porsche Panamera
struck Candelario’s Audi A4 a short time after the Audi had
collided with a third vehicle.

“We’ve determined it was two separate crashes,” Pikul said.

Mourning, currently the Heat’s vice president for player
programs and development, acknowledged leaving the scene.
Investigators said he returned about 40 minutes later, in another
car driven by his wife, Tracy.

“I left and came right back. Left and came back. There was no
panic at all because I didn’t do anything wrong. There was a
current accident already in progress,” the 41-year-old Mourning
said.

It’s against state law to be involved in an accident and leave
the scene. Pikul said no charges had been filed as of midafternoon
Wednesday and investigators planned to interview Mourning later in
the day.

“I’ve been very cooperative with them,” the former Heat all-star
said.

Aronfeld said Candelario suffered a concussion and memory loss
in the crash, which has left him unable to work at his job at a
bookstore. Candelario, who said he does not drink or use illegal
drugs, said he was driving home from an evening on South Beach when
the crash occurred.

“I don’t remember much. There’s only bits and pieces,” he
said.

But Candelario said he overheard one of the state troopers
identifying the 6-foot-10 Mourning, a Virginia native and
Georgetown standout who is one of Miami’s best-known sports
figures. He and his wife have a high school named for them and they
have held a fundraiser for President Barack Obama at their Coral
Gables home. This week, Mourning is hosting the annual Zo’s Summer
Groove event to benefit disadvantaged youths.

“I said, `You’re Alonzo Mourning?’ That’s about it,” Candelario
said. “I’m not a follower of basketball.”

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning was sued Wednesday over a weekend traffic crash in Florida that raised questions about whether he improperly left the scene.

The lawsuit seeking unspecified damages was filed on behalf of 21-year-old William Candelario, who suffered head injuries in the rollover crash early Sunday near Miami Beach. Candelario said he has little memory of what happened and his lawyer said the lawsuit is aimed at finding answers.

Mere hours before the Heat’s Game 2 collapse that immediately fell into the all-timer category because of the stage and the stakes, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was praising his big man Chris Bosh.

Spoelstra was recalling how surprised he was to find that Bosh was as competitive as he was. A coach who has been associated with Alonzo Mourning, Dwyane Wade, Tim Hardaway and LeBron James in his tenure with Miami called Bosh one of the most competitive players he has known.

If that’s the case, then the past two days have been pure misery for Bosh. It must have been difficult for Bosh to live with himself after the errors he made, the bucket he allowed, the foul he didn’t commit and the overall performance he offered.

For the player who has been called by his own teammates the most important player on the Heat, Bosh didn’t hold up his end of the bargain in Game 2. And frankly, that’s putting it politely.

Now, the least heralded member of the Big 3 is back in his hometown of Dallas, probably sulking, probably avoiding conversations with anyone he might recognize.

But he’s back with a chance to redeem himself. It’s an act he has accomplished before in these playoffs, reestablishing himself after a dreadful showing. This one, though, will be his most challenging recovery yet.

Dusting himself off after falling so horrifically in Thursday’s Game 2 might just be the ultimate test of Bosh’s first year in Miami. And given how much he already has been through, that’s saying quite a lot.

It wasn’t just the final seconds, although that will be the most memorable and most error-filled sequence if this loss turns into anything more than just a one-game setback.

It was the entire showing. In the previous game, a game where Bosh was critical of himself for making just 5 of his 18 field-goal attempts, he was far better than the shooting percentage indicated.

Bosh was aggressive in that contest, getting to the foul line 12 times, coming down with five offensive rebounds and nine total, dishing off three assists, swatting that J.J. Barea shot deep into the crowd and never turning the ball over once.

The Heat will live with misses from Bosh if the rest of his game is that complete.

Entering Thursday’s follow-up, there was no indication he would be anything but that player again. After all, since that emotionally overwhelming Game 3 in Boston when he managed just six points and five rebounds, Bosh has been the picture of consistency.

He followed that game up with a perfectly timed 20-and-12 game that included the game-sealing tip-in.

He had two a pair of 30-point games against Chicago, making Carlos Boozer look foolish on the court and for not including him in the list of Miami’s great players. He admitted then to being somewhat motivated by that omission by Boozer.

Maybe someone on the Mavericks needs to insult him. Or maybe that offensive performance Thursday will be enough of a stimulus.

Granted, Bosh tends to get lost in the Heat offense when Dwyane Wade or LeBron James, or both, are having one of their huge scoring nights. And Wade was on a tear through three-and-a-half quarters Thursday, essentially making Bosh a nonfactor for several segments of the game.

When he did get opportunities, he didn’t appear confident in his shot, falling in love instead with the pump fake. When he did drive, he was searching for contact rather than finishing with conviction.

Gotta run!.

Haslem said there won’t be any reminiscing about 2006 when the Heat visits Dallas for Game 3 of the 2011 NBA Finals on Sunday at 8 p.m.

“That was a different team, a different season. It was a long time ago,’’ Haslem said. “It was a completely different situation. I don’t harp on that. I want to look forward.’’

When Miami returned to Dallas for Game 6 of the 2006 NBA Finals, the Heat was flying on momentum. Miami trailed after losing the first two in Dallas, yet rallied to win all three in Miami.

Things are different this time.

Miami looked to be in control, only the Mavericks stormed back by closing on a 22-5 run to win Game 2 Thursday night, evening the series at 1. The following three games are in Dallas, and like Haslem’s thoughts on 2006, the Heat needs to have a short memory.

“We’ve been a very resilient group all season long. We’ve been tested,’’ said coach Erik Spoelstra, whose team led by 15 with 7:14 remaining in Game 2 before losing 95-93.

“We’ve had our moments where we feel uncomfortable and feel like our backs are against the wall. That’s when we’ve responded and been our best. We have a lot of guys who have some character and toughness to be able to respond to a game like this. We’re not happy about this. … This is a long series, OK? So we’re not happy about what happened, but we got an opportunity in Game 3.’’

Wade was not only a witness to the Heat’s big comeback against the Mavericks in Game 3 of the 2006 series but was a catalyst. Miami was on the verge of being wiped out of those Finals, down 0-2 in the series and trailing Dallas by 15 in the fourth quarter. Wade scored 12 of his 42 points down the stretch as Miami rallied to win that third game. The Mavs didn’t win again as the Heat rolled to its only championship.

The Heat has to hope Dallas doesn’t turn the tables. In 2006, Dallas hit just one field goal in the final five minutes of Game 3. Thursday, the Heat only hit one field goal in the final seven minutes.

“You know what? I have been a part of it,’’ Wade said. “I understand once you don’t close a team down, they get confidence and life. This is a big challenge for us. We’re going to have to live up to the challenge, the hole we dug for ourselves. We’re going to see what we’re made of as a team.’’

Haslem — who along with Wade is the only active Heat player still around from the ’06 championship team — echoed Spoelstra’s thoughts on Miami’s ability to return to form. “We’re mentally tough, have veterans who have been through this,’’ Haslem said.

In this postseason, however, Miami hasn’t been in this position.

Thursday’s loss was Miami’s first at AmericanAirlines Arena during these playoffs. In the opening round series against the Sixers, Miami was up 3-0 before losing Game 4. Miami closed that series in its following home game. The Heat took the first two at home in the semifinals against Boston before losing Game 3. Miami responded by winning the next two — one in Boston and what turned into the finale in Miami.

In the Eastern Conference finals, Miami lost the opener in Chicago by a wide margin. The Heat won the second game at United Center and didn’t lose to the Bulls again.

Unlike Miami’s other three playoff opponents, the Mavericks took home-court advantage away from the Heat. Miami, of course, can take it right back with a victory in Dallas.

“We’re going to approach the next one like it’s our last,’’ said Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki, whose layup with 3.6 seconds left was the difference in Thursday’s game. “You cannot get a split and get a huge emotional win in Game 2 and then go home and lose Game 3. As far as I’m concerned, the next one is the biggest game of them all.’’

Said James: “It’s a ball game now. With the series tied 1-1, we’re looking forward to the challenge. … We’re a confident bunch. We play great on the road. It’s going to be a hostile environment. Their fans and team are going to bring everything they have. We have to come out with it all.’’

What do you guys think about this.

The season began with Udonis Haslem inspiring the Miami Heat with his words. He gave a passionate speech in the locker room nearly seven months ago, talking about how desperately he wanted to win a championship to honor his recently deceased mother.

Now, Haslem’s inspiring the Heat with his play.

Or, perhaps more accurately, simply by playing.

He scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and had a pair of dunks — the first was his first basket since Nov. 20 — to begin and end a critical 10-0 run. That was the final margin Wednesday in Miami’s 85-75 win over Chicago Bulls that tied the Eastern Conference finals at a game apiece.

“Huge. Huge,” Heat guard Dwyane Wade said. “He was the player of the game. No question about it.”

Wade said those words on a night when LeBron James fought off a cold for game-highs of 29 points and 10 rebounds.

James had the dazzling numbers and spectacular finish, but the clear spark came from one of the two Miami players left from the 2006 championship season.

“It’s kind of hard to be patient when you work so hard to get back,” Haslem said. “But I understand, we’ve had a formula that’s been working for us. My teammates have done a tremendous job of getting us to this point. So I just had to be patient.”

Not any more, he doesn’t.

He’ll be in the rotation Sunday when Miami hosts Game 3 of the East finals, what will be the Miami native’s first home game since getting injured. The crowd roar when he checks in may make the building shake.

“That’s what we’ve been waiting on since November,” James said Wednesday, discussing Haslem’s impact.

In Miami on Thursday, Heat executive and former All-Star Alonzo Mourning shook his head and marveled at what he saw from Haslem in Chicago.

“U-D is a proven veteran and champion. … It was just a matter of him being healthy again,” Mourning said. “Now you see that he’s healthy. He’s not really thinking about his body anymore. He’s out there reacting, using his talents. And he had a pretty good impact on the outcome of the game last night.”

Haslem ruptured the Lisfranc ligament in his left foot on Nov. 20 while guarding Zach Randolph in a game at Memphis. He was carried off the court and the fear was that his season was over, since that injury can take up to a year to fully heal in some cases.

He wanted to come back in four months, and actually returned for short stints in two previous postseason games, looking very rusty.

On Wednesday, that was anything but the case.

MIAMI – The season began with Udonis Haslem inspiring the Miami Heat with his words.

He gave a passionate speech in the locker room nearly seven months ago, talking about how desperately he wanted to win a championship to honor his recently deceased mother.

Now, Haslem’s inspiring the Heat with his play.

Or, perhaps more accurately, simply by playing.

He scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, and had a pair of dunks – the first was his first basket since Nov. 20 – to begin and end a critical 10-0 run. That was the final margin Wednesday in Miami’s 85-75 win over Chicago Bulls that tied the Eastern Conference finals at a game apiece.

“Huge. Huge,” Heat guard Dwyane Wade said. “He was the player of the game. No question about it.”

Wade said those words on a night where LeBron James fought off a cold for game-highs of 29 points and 10 rebounds, plus scored nine points in a late 11-2 spurt that sealed the win.

“I’m happy for him. Just putting in the time and the effort, just getting back, getting back to game shape, feeling healthy, feeling confident. He helped change the game for us.”

In Miami on Thursday, Heat executive and former All-Star Alonzo Mourning shook his head and marveled at what saw from Haslem in Chicago.

“U-D is a proven veteran and champion. … It was just a matter of him being healthy again,” Mourning said. “Now you see that he’s healthy. He’s not really thinking about his body anymore.
He wanted to come back in four months, and actually returned for short stints in two previous postseason games, looking very rusty.

On Wednesday, that was anything but the case.

“It was certainly inspirational, the minutes he gave us,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “And that’s who he’s been his entire career. He’s always led us in charges taken, hits, dives on the floor. … He’s smart. He’s tough. He does all the little intangibles, and that’s why we’ve always said, the image of a Miami Heat player, that’s Udonis Haslem.”
