The Miami Heat improved their 2011/12 NBA season record to 4-0 (second time in franchise history), defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 103-101 on Dec. 30

The Miami Heat improved their 2011/12 NBA season record to 4-0 (second time in franchise history), defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 103-101 on Dec. 30.

The Heat came out strong against the Timberwolves, but a poor second quarter performance brought Minnesota back into the game. Miami regained control of the contest in the third quarter, but the Timberwolves refused to go down without a fight.

The Timberwolves actually had a three point lead with a little over a minute left in the game, but a strong move to the rim by LeBron James—who was fouled during the play—gave them a chance to tie up the contest. LeBron made the ensuing free throw, setting the stage for some final minute heroics.

Once again, Dwyane Wade who finished with 19 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds, stepped up when the Heat needed him the most, finishing a LeBron lob with a layup and giving Miami the two point lead. The Timberwolves had one last chance to tie up the game, but Wayne Ellington’s jumper bounced off the rim.

“I’m glad we played them early because later they’re going to be trouble,” Wade told reporters after the game. “So I think Timberwolves fans will have something to cheer about for a while here.”

Birthday Celebrant, LeBron had another dominant performance for the Heat, finishing with 34 points (game high), 10 assists and 8 rebounds. Chris Bosh also had a solid outing, putting up 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.

Norris Cole and Udonis Haslem scored the Heat’s only points off the bench. Cole put up 12 points and 4 assists, while Haslem finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Miami’s next game will be on Jan. 1, when they host the Charlotte Bobcats at the American Airlines Arena. The Bobcats gave the Heat a tough contest on Dec. 28, and the next encounter between the two teams should be just as entertaining.

Playing LeBron James any day of the year is enough to make most opponents break out in cold sweats in the middle of the night.

Be one of the unfortunate teams to get a game against King James on his birthday, and you know you’re in for a long night.

James turned a ripe old 27 on Friday, and the Miami Heat star says he always plays with a little extra juice on his birthday.

“My birthday and my mom’s birthday are the two days I feel real, real good about playing basketball,” James said on Friday morning after the team’s shootaround. “I’ve had the luxury of having games on my birthday and my mom’s birthday so we’ll see what happens.”

That could be bad news for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The undefeated Heat play at Target Center in the fifth time in James’ nine seasons that he has played on his birthday.

In four previous birthday games, James has averaged 35.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists. He’s also shot 55 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3-point range.

So what gets into him on those days?

“You know my birthday when I turned 15 or I turned 9, when I was growing up, it wasn’t the best of days on my birthday,” he said. “To see where I am today, and to be able to turn 21 and be in the NBA and turn 22 and now turn 27 and be a part of this league, it’s a testament. It’s also I’m very humbled that I am able to be here and I’m very blessed.”

James’ best birthday performance came in 2009 when he had 48 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in a victory over Atlanta while he was still with the Cleveland Cavaliers. That’s also the only time he’s headed home for his birthday cake with a victory.

James had 38 points and seven assists in a loss to Miami in 2008, 33 points and nine boards against Chicago in 2006 and 22 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in a loss to Indiana as a rookie in 2003.

“It’s amazing how many games he gets on his birthday, I’ll tell you that,” Heat star Dwyane Wade said. “He’s had a lot of games on his birthday. The schedule works that way.”

James is playing some of the best basketball of his career early this season for the Heat, who are coming off a disappointing NBA finals loss to the Dallas Mavericks last season. He’s averaging 32.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists in his first three games, and has developed a low-post game to boot.

“He’s been playing exceptionally well,” Wade said. “He’s in a different mind state right now. I expect him to continue the mind state he’s in.

“You can’t always know what that is going to result to, but he always enjoys certain moments. It’s a special moment when you get an opportunity to play on this day. The biggest thing is to try to come out and lead us to a win.”

James said the best birthday present he ever received was the Hummer SUV his mother bought him when he turned 18.

The Timberwolves had their own birthday treat for James when they shut down guard J.J. Barea for the game with a strained right hamstring. The super-quick Barea hurt the Heat in the NBA finals last season and was a major reason the Mavs were able to pull off the upset.

Asked if he will miss chasing Barea around, James didn’t hesitate: “Absolutely not.”

(Sports Network) – The NBA season is in its premature stage and the Miami Heat
already appear to be headed to the Finals. The undefeated Heat look to improve
to 4-0 on the season when they pay a visit to the Minnesota Timberwolves
tonight at the Target Center.

Dallas, Boston and most recently Charlotte have fell victim to the Heat, who
edged the Bobcats by a 96-95 score on Wednesday at Time Warner Cable Arena.
Dwyane Wade sank a jump shot with 2.9 seconds to go and finished with 10
points, while LeBron James led all scorers with 35 points. Chris Bosh finished
with 25 points for the Heat, who erased a 16-point deficit to improve to 2-0
on the road.

“First half wasn’t Miami Heat basketball,” said James, who has compiled 98
points in the first three games. “We gave up 60 points. … In order for us to
be successful we have to defend.”

Miami is 3-0 to start a season for the fourth time in team history and hasn’t
won its first four contests since a 4-0 start back in 2004-05. After visiting
the Timberwolves in the Twin Cities, the Heat will return to south Florida for
a three-game homestand versus the Bobcats, Hawks and Pacers.

Minnesota has dropped its first two games of the season and will begin a five-
game homestand this evening against Miami, Dallas, San Antonio, Memphis and
Cleveland.

The Timberwolves were beaten by Oklahoma City in the season opener, then
dropped a 98-95 decision at Milwaukee on Tuesday despite a solid performance
from Kevin Love. The big man posted 31 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, while
Luke Ridnour and Michael Beasley finished with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

“If we played with the type of energy and focus in the first half as we did in
the second half, we would have had a much better chance at winning,” said
Terry Porter, who was serving as Minnesota’s head coach because Rick Adelman
missed the game to attend the funeral service of his mother-in-law.

Wolves new guard Jose Barea left in the fourth quarter against the Bucks with
a hamstring injury and is doubtful for tonight. Barea was acquired in the
offseason after winning an NBA title with Dallas a year ago.

Minnesota is 0-2 to start the season for the first time since losing the first
five contests of the 2007-08 campaign. It has lost a franchise-record 17 in a
row after closing out last season with 15 consecutive defeats, and hasn’t
tasted victory since a 122-101 triumph versus Utah last March 11.

The T’Wolves dropped both matchups with Miami a year ago and have lost seven
of the previous 10 meetings between the two clubs. The Heat, however, have
lost nine of their past 14 contests at the Target Center.

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

MINNEAPOLIS — The Heat better be awake Friday night.

For a change, the Minnesota Timberwolves feature some talent, including a lighter but no less relentless Kevin Love and two prized rookies, forward Derrick Williams (the No. 2 overall pick) and Spanish sensation Ricky Rubio, who already has shown court vision few in the NBA can match.

They have a proven offensive scheme, one being implemented by former Rockets, Blazers and Warriors head coach Rick Adelman. Oh, and they have old friend – and now close-cropped – Michael Beasley, who has struggled from the perimeter thus far.

Here’s what to zero in on Friday night while watching Miami (3-0) play the Wolves (0-2) at the Target Center:

What does a day of rest do for the Heat?

Miami looked weary Wednesday night in Charlotte while playing its third game in four days. That manifested itself mostly on the boards, where the Heat got beaten down. It was the first time in franchise history that Miami won with at least a 20-rebound deficit.

The Heat got into Minneapolis early Thursday morning but had a full day to recover, with Erik Spoelstra making practice optional. Most players participated, although Dwyane Wade (sore foot) skipped it. No worries. He’ll go tonight.

Can Udonis Haslem find his range?

The Heat forward has been active thus far, and appears fully healed from last season’s foot surgery. But his shooting stroke has been off the past two games. Haslem missed three of his four jumpers Wednesday, all from 15 to 20 feet. He now is 2-for-13 overall the past two games. He’ll play heavy minutes again Friday night, with Minnesota often using a small but agile front line. His primary job: Block out Love, who led the league in rebounding last season with 15.2 a game, including 4.5 on the offensive boards.

Will Wade or LeBron James finally hoist a three?

Understand, this is not to suggest that either should. Still, it’s been remarkable that both players have resisted the temptation to unleash a single shot from beyond the arc.

James’ offensive efficiency through three games has been staggering – he is shooting 59 percent from the field. And even though Wade struggled against Charlotte, shooting 5-for-13 from the field, 10 of those shots came from inside the paint.

How does Spoelstra manage the perimeter rotation?

If not for Wade’s minor foot injury, James Jones might not have played a minute Wednesday, and that’s after sinking six three-pointers in the first two contests. Instead, Spoelstra has been expanding Shane Battier’s workload.

In 20 minutes against the Bobcats, Battier didn’t score, but he blocked three shots and played a role in slowing the rotund but skilled Boris Diaw.

One of Battier’s contributions was even more subtle: He was camped out in the corner on Wade’s winning drive, and defenders were no more likely to leave him than if Jones had been in that spot.

The air of invincibility that had permeated the Miami Heat’s first two games was absent at the start. In its place was a quick 11-0 deficit.

Dwyane Wade then was absent at the start of the second half with a foot injury.

Gone, but not forgotten.

Regaining his legs, or at least enough of them, Wade banked in a short shot with 2.9 seconds to play to close out the scoring in a 96-95 victory on Wednesday night over the Bobcats at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It was a somewhat surprising finish, one achieved after a Gerald Henderson three-pointer with 12.2 seconds to play had put the Bobcats up by one, because it was Wade who was designated as the go-to guy on a night LeBron James led the Heat with 35 points.

Wade, who had bruised his left foot and missed the first 10 minutes of the third period, was four of 12 from the field before his game-winner.

“When he called it,” Wade said of coach Erik Spoelstra’s instructions, “I was surprised, because LeBron had it going.”

Wade, in fact, was about to tell Spoelstra that it should be James’ play, then decided he was up to the moment.

Barely, with his left foot throbbing.

“I had no lift,” the veteran guard said, “that’s why I shot-putted it.”

For most of the night, it appeared the Heat had no lift, falling behind by 16 in the first half, then losing Wade at the start of the third quarter.

But there was enough in support to push the record to 3-0, from James, who also had seven assists and six rebounds, to 25 points on eight-of-13 shooting from forward Chris Bosh, to a needed 15-point outing from point guard Mario Chalmers and lockdown defense from Shane Battier in his longest outing of the season.

“You’ve got to win some of these games ugly,” Spoelstra said. “We settled down.”

The Heat held the Bobcats to 10 third-quarter points to get back into it and then rode the aggression of Bosh and James in the fourth until Wade had his moment.

Wade’s moment came after both he and James botched dunks, although James’s attempt should have counted since it bounced off Gerald Henderson’s head and back out after clearing the rim. James joked he would appeal to the league for his lost points.

But with the game on the line, it was Wade’s to win or lose.

Spoelstra said it was not because of Wade’s clutch reputation or James’s fourth-quarter struggles that had carried over to this season, but rather because he saw an opening on the same set that seconds earlier had resulted in a Wade turnover.

“We saw him able to put the ball on the floor,” Spoelstra said. “He had a rough night at times, but he saw a gap he could get into.”

The game ended with a missed three-point attempt by Bobcats guard D.J. Augustin.

“It’s good to see us show some resolve, some toughness,” Spoelstra said.

That resolve and toughness arrived when needed most.

“The first half,” James said, “wasn’t Miami Heat basketball.”

The Heat entered having trailed just 14 seconds this season. That figure grew exponentially, with Charlotte bolting to that 11-0 lead, moving ahead 32-20 after the first quarter and 60-45 at halftime.

Playing on the second night of their first back-to-back set of the season, the Heat hardly had the legs that powered a dazzling transition attack in the season-opening victories over the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics.

With Wade out at the start of the third quarter, James decided it had to be his style of basketball, consistently attacking the rim.

“I decided to add a little bit more,” he said, continuing his torrid scoring start to the season.

In the end, though, he stood aside, waiting and watching Wade win it.

“I guess,” James said with a grin, “that’s why they pay him the big bucks.”

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The best way to get a bad game out of your system is to bounce right back the next night.

That’s what happened with point guard Mario Chalmers in the Heat’s 96-95 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night.

After a long night on Tuesday in the Heat’s 115-107 win over Boston — one in which backup Norris Cole stole the spotlight and most of the playing time — Chalmers rebounded with a season-high 15 points and four assists against just one turnover.

He played 31 minutes and was on the floor down the stretch as the Heat rallied from a 16-point deficit and ultimately won on Dwyane Wade’s bank shot with 2.9 seconds remaining.

“[Tuesday] night was just a rough game for me,” Chalmers said. “I’m not making any excuses. I know I can play better than what I did [Tuesday]. I just came out and my teammates told me to be aggressive, and that’s what I did.”

Chalmers was the only Heat player in double figures besides LeBron James (35 points) and Chris Bosh (25 points). He scored six of his points in the third quarter while Wade was out with a foot injury, a quarter in which the Heat roared back and outscored the Bobcats 24-10. They trailed 60-45 at halftime.

Chalmers was 6 of 12 from the field, and hit a three-pointer.

Chalmers had committed six turnovers against Boston and watched as Cole played 29 minutes and scored 20 points.

“He showed great resolve, and that’s what this is all about,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “This is a team with many different contributions and many guys have to sacrifice. It might be different guys on different nights depending on the flow of the game, the opponents, etc.”

Cole played just 10 minutes, and finished with five points and one assist.

Chalmers said he’s fine with the way Spoelstra goes with the point guard who’s playing the best on any given night.

“That’s how we roll,” he said. “Whoever’s got it that night, Coach is going to stick with them. We’re a two-headed monster, me and Norris at the point. We’re just trying to keep the team going.”

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The nicknames came in bunches on Tuesday night: Cole Train, Stone Cole, Ice Cole. After his breakout game in the Heat home opener, Heat point guard Norris Cole found himself the center of attention in the NBA.

ESPN highlighted his performance. He was interviewed after Tuesday’s game by TNT. On Twitter, Cole picked up at least 10,000 followers between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. For a rookie from Cleveland State, it was a lot to digest in a short amount of time.

“From a social media standpoint, it was kind of crazy,” Cole said.

Seated beside his locker in Charlotte’s Time Warner Cable Arena before Wednesday’s game, Cole tried to put the previous day into perspective.

“I understand that last night was last night in the NBA,” Cole said. “Now I’m focusing and moving forward. [Tuesday] was a stepping stone and I now I want to move in another direction of getting better and helping the team get better.”

Rookie rivalry

Pitted against Cole on Wednesday was a rookie guard who is no stranger to fame. Kemba Walker, the former University of Connecticut star, was named college basketball’s national player of the year last season after leading the Huskies to the national title. Cole was named the Horizon League’s player of the year.

Cole said the moment he realized that he could make it in the NBA was the first time he played against Walker. It was the summer of their senior seasons at a skills camp hosted by Nets guard Deron Williams.

It was a camp for the best young point guards in the country. It didn’t take long for Cole to realize he belonged.

“The first day,” Cole said. “As you get out there and start competing you get a feel for where your skill level is at.”

Cole and Walker never played against each other in college but the two guards met up again the next summer at the predraft camp in Chicago.

“We were together most of the camp and we were just going hard,” Walker said. “I know he’s a hard worker just from being with him that whole week and I could just tell that he wanted to get better and that’s what I wanted to do, too.”

SPLITTING TIME

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra reiterated the importance of both Cole and Mario Chalmers to the Heat’s plans this season. Cole is the offensive sparkplug suited for the Heat’s plans to push the pace of the game. Chalmers’ versatility allows him to provide sparks with his defense.

The Miami Heat will look for their third straight win of the season, when they face the Charlotte Bobcats on Dec.28.

The Miami Heat will look for their third straight win of the season, when they face the Charlotte Bobcats on Dec.28.

The Heat played excellent basketball in their first two games of the season, smashing the Dallas Mavericks in their season opener. The Heat played another tough team in their second game of the season, defeating the Boston Celtics 115-107 on Dec. 27.

Miami did get a little sloppy in the second half against the Celtics, but rookie Norris Cole stepped up in the final moments of the game, giving the Heat their second win of the season.

“He’s [Norris] earned their respect,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters after the game. “Even though it’s been a short period of time, about three weeks, because he’s pure, he’s all about the team. He’s mature and he gets them the ball. You’re always a popular guy when you find people when they’re open.”

Cole certainly looks like another NBA star in the making, and Heat fans can only hope he keeps it up throughout the season.

The Bobcats beat the Milwaukee Bucks by a point in their season opener, and they’ll be in for a serious jump in competition when they face the Heat tonight.

It’s no secret the Heat are the most hated team in the NBA, and LeBron James and company are playing with chips on their shoulders. With a season under their belt, the “big three” understand every team in the league is gunning for them, and they’re determined to make a statement every time they step on the floor.

“We’re not the hunted,” Chris Bosh told reporters. “We’re still the hunters. Absolutely, the way I see it, it’s like a kill or be killed mentality. The enemies are out there and you’ve got to get them before they get you. You know, Chicago, Boston, Orlando, New York. They’re all good teams in our conference. We’ve got to get them before they get us. I like to be ambitious and strike first, put other guys on their heels.”

Miami made their statement loud and clear in the first two games of the season, and I expect another dominant performance against the Bobcats.

That deflating sound you hear is the suspense beginning to leak out of the NBA season.

Yes, it’s only a few days old, but a fifth of the schedule has already been erased by the lockout and if Miami figures out how to attack zone defenses, it’s over. No team is going to beat the Heat then. In the opener they blew out a Dallas team that came back to steal the finals by gumming up Miami’s offensive machine with a zone. On Tuesday night, they outlasted a Boston team that deployed the same defense in the second half to avoid getting run out of the gym. Though the Celtics clawed back within three points at the 2-minute mark, in the eight quarters the Heat have played, they’ve trailed for only 14 seconds. Get used to it.

Miami has already fixed the problems that were so apparent when LeBron James and his super sidekicks, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, made their debut together against Boston to kick off the 2010 season. They can play sustained, ferocious defense and they’re even more opportunistic — and spectacular — than they were in transition by the end of last season. Even so, Miami coach Eric Spoelstra used some of his free time during the lockout to pick the brains of some of the country’s best coaches — Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Kentucky’s John Calipari and Oregon football coach Chip Kelly, who runs a particularly hectic version of the no-huddle spread offense — looking for ways to rev up Miami’s attack. The lessons appear to have taken. The faster pace and extra space on the floor means more room for James, Wade and Bosh to take advantage of individual matchups, which plays into Miami’s strength.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers didn’t need to consult the scoreboard at halftime to convince him of that. He watched the finals, saw how well a zone worked for the Mavericks, and despite a commitment to man-to-man defense from the outset of his NBA career, began working on the scheme over the summer. Boston unveiled its version in the third quarter, while the Heat stood around and settled for jumpers, and the Celtics slowly climbed back into the game. An 18-6 run over the final 6 minutes of the period — Miami helpfully misfired on its last eight shots — brought the Celtics to 91-83. That margin seemed comfortable enough, though, until former Heat guard Keyon Dooling scored seven straight points to cut it to 108-105 with 2:02 left.

What do you guys think about this.

By David J. Neal The Miami Herald It’s early in Norris Cole’s rookie season, but it’s already looking late in the day for the Heat’s starting point guard Mario Chalmers

By David J. Neal The Miami Herald

It’s early in Norris Cole’s rookie season, but it’s already looking late in the day for the Heat’s starting point guard Mario Chalmers.

It’s not just that Cole threw in 20 points Tuesday against Boston on 8-of-16 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from the line while Chalmers added only four points. Or, that he had four assists, four rebounds and only three turnovers while Chalmers committed six turnovers. Or, that the Heat did spend their first-round pick in June’s draft on a point guard.

It’s that Chalmers and Cole split minutes evenly in Sunday’s season opener, but Cole logged 29:07 Tuesday while Chalmers was on the bench for all but 18:53. And that, down the stretch as Boston constantly threatened to steal the game, the Heat coaching staff trusted Cole to be on the floor. The Heat stars trusted Cole to take the clinching shots late (which he made).

“It wasn’t any kind of indictment on [Chalmers],” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra insisted. “He came back after struggling at the beginning of the third quarter and he did settle down and make some plays. That was good, to see him show some resolve and some toughness. That’s what we’ve done a lot of times. If a lineup is going, if a player is playing well, I won’t necessarily change for the sake of changing.’’

Cole’s toughness and resolve already are apparent.

The Heat spent most of Tuesday night cruising with a double-digit lead, but they didn’t truly begin to bum-rush the senior Celtics out of the game until the youngest member of the Heat took the floor. The next time Cole left, with 2:25 left in the second quarter, the Heat led 59-49 and had led by as much as 17.

And 27 seconds into the fourth quarter, when the Heat offense clanked and clunked until Boston got the locals’ lead under 10, Cole stepped up with a 16-foot jumper 27 seconds into the fourth quarter that stopped a run of eight consecutive missed shots.

It was Cole who took the charge from Brandon Bass with 3:15 left and the Heat up by eight.

From his back, Cole pumped his arms and kicked his legs like a baby having a happy fit.

“He’s done it in practice, he’s a tough kid,” Spoelstra said. “He played football in high school — any kind of loose ball you can see he’s trying to run through people to get it. When he’s attacking the paint, he’s got his head down looking for contact. He’ll willingly sacrifice his body for the team and he’s done that in practice. When you have your smaller players doing that, it gains the respect of all.”

Cole drained a long two-point jumper to stretch the lead back to 108-98. On the other side of a 7-0 Boston run, Cole nailed two more shots as part of scoring six of the Heat’s last seven points.

The last time the Celtics saw LeBron James on the same floor, he was on his knees, after his play had brought them to theirs.

James had beaten back one of his NBA demons, finishing off Boston by averaging 34 points and 11 rebounds in the final two games of the 4-1 series.

Dwyane Wade hadn’t been too bad, either, especially in light of his struggles in the regular season’s encounters with Boston: He averaged 30.2 points over the five-game set while filling the rest of the stat sheet.

So if you thought the Celtics had their fill of both in May, here’s some news for them as they visit AmericanAirlines Arena for the Heat’s home opener Tuesday night:

Wade and James are more trouble now.

Both are more trouble because of what the Heat has done around them, more so than anything – whether reshaping their bodies or expanding their games or improving their communication — that they have done for themselves.

They now are in roles they were born to play, in an offense that better suits their talents. They now are better positioned to put aside some of the weaker elements of their repertoires, from overdribbling to long-range shooting, and focus on relentless attacking.

How did this come about?

Consider that two of the major issues for the Heat offense last season were pace and space, issues that got in the way of their stars’ innate athletic grace, often making them appear clumsy and confused.

Erik Spoelstra refrained from implementing much at all on offense until a couple of months into the 2010-11 season, more concerned with establishing a defensive identity. Consequently, the Heat was deadly on run-outs off opponents’ missed shots, but would often bog down after baskets, with Wade struggling to find his customary “comfort” spots on the floor and James pounding the ball at the top of the key.

The offense progressed as the season did, before reverting to its unwieldy and unsightly form at times against Dallas in the Finals.

With time to spare, Spoelstra crossed the country to study other coaches – as has been mentioned in this space – starting with Oregon’s unconventional football boss Chip Kelly and continuing on to conversations with the likes of Billy Donovan, Urban Meyer and John Calipari.

It was then that Spoelstra chose to focus more on versatility and interchangeability of the Heat’s core players rather than the conventional limitations of the overall roster.

When work began after the lockout, he also heard his players’ pleas to loosen some of the offensive restrictions and let them to do more reading and reacting.

Meanwhile, his own boss was making moves that would make it easier for James and Wade to be themselves. First, Pat Riley drafted Norris Cole to fill a hole the Heat has had – with the exception of one healthy year from Jason Williams – since Tim Hardaway’s knees cratered: a pace-pushing natural point guard.

Even though Cole has much to learn, it’s clear James and Wade already trust him; when the rookie was in the game Sunday, they tended to let him handle, whereas they took more control with Mario Chalmers on the court.

With Cole orchestrating, James and Wade are free to slice and cut without the ball, repeatedly violating the paint and causing defenders to scramble.

Riley’s other major move?

He signed Shane Battier while choosing to retain Mike Miller and James Jones. Battier played only four minutes Sunday, and Miller remains sidelined by hernia surgery. Still, when all three are available, it will do more than rest James and Wade during the 66-game regular-season sprint. It may also convince James and Wade that, with all those dead-eye shooters, there’s really no need for them to do so much of something that simply isn’t their specialty. Both can sink three-pointers, when in rhythm, but they’re bailing out defenses when they heave too many.

Sunday they didn’t take a single one.

James, even while spending more time on the perimeter than in the post, averaged a reasonable 12 feet on his 19 shots. Wade’s 21 shots averaged just nine feet. They were relentless attackers of the rim, as James’ 19 free throws best illustrated. They were the best of themselves and, when they’re that, they’ll get the best of just about anyone.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Dec 26, 2011 – At no point in the 2010-11 season did the Miami Heat look like that. The Heat had mammoth wins, brilliant performances, artful offensive assaults in the debut season of the LeBron James-Dwyane Wade-Chris Bosh triptych, but never did the Heat so thoroughly ruin a great team on the road on such a bright stage. The closest match is the Heat’s Christmas 2010 win over the Lakers in Los Angeles; that game was most notable for Chris Bosh crushing L.A.’s frontline.

This was different. This was a full-court assault by the Heat’s superior athletes that refused to allow the older, more craft than splash Dallas Mavericks to breathe. With Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion, the Mavericks never exactly look young. But they looked like a club you’d find at the Coral Gables YMCA against the new racing Heat. Any questions about whether the preseason talk about the Heat’s new up-tempo offense was just hype were excused for now. It’s real, and it made the Mavericks look awful.

SI.com: Heat Convincing In Victory

Tom Haberstroh wrote a detailed analysis on the creation and early evolution of the Heat’s new offense last week. Erik Spoelstra, the Heat’s young and curious coach, visited Eugene, Oreg., to watch Chip Kelly’s Oregon Ducks work through their infamous spread offense. Spoelstra and his staff began translating it for basketball, focusing on using space and speed to create opportunities and mismatches. IT WORKED. The Heat played an up-tempo game — each team had 100 possessions; in 2010-11, the Heat averaged 90 per game and the Mavericks were at 91. They attacked the rim, which made the selection on the team’s long shots look a lot better.

The Heat scored 31 points on the break and 44 points in the paint. Add in the team’s 25 made free throws (15 of them from LeBron) and 69 of the Heat’s 105 points were scored at the rim or at the stripe, where free throws usually come on interior plays. That’s simply terrifying: the Heat look to be abandoning their long-jumper identity — one in which transition played a useful role but came too infrequently — in favor of something like an eternal invasion. They never stopped coming at the Mavs, not until they were up by 35 and called it a night.

The Heat have another down-tempo test on Tuesday: the Boston Celtics. We know Miami can bludgeon Boston in the half-court — we saw in the playoffs last season. But if the Heat can do to the Celtics’ still-stout defense what they did to the Mavericks, the NBA is in real trouble.

WARRIORS ON THE BRINK

The Golden State Warriors are in a terrible position. Stephen Curry, the third-year guard, is the team’s best player and best hope for a win any given night. Monta Ellis is a great scorer and a good passer, but Curry’s superior efficiency and court vision make him a much more valuable player. Curry, however, is injured. He turned an ankle on a Jimmer Fredette crossover on Tuesday, was considered a toss-up leading up to the Warriors’ Sunday night opener against the L.A. Clippers, and eventually played. He was awful. Chris Paul is a damned good defender, but he’s not “hold Steph Curry to 4-12 shooting with five turnovers” good. No one is.

The Warriors have to sit Curry to save their season, and sitting Curry could ruin their season. Both truths seem completely obvious right now, and only the good fortune of fast healing or a true joint renaissance for David Lee and Andris Biedrins can make either wrong. If Curry limps through a few weeks of action, this ankle injury could bug him all season long. The Warriors can’t afford a sub-optimal Curry. But if Golden State lets him heal for a few weeks, they could legitimately be a half-dozen games out of a playoff spot by the time he returns. Mark Jackson and the front office have all but branded a playoff bid as an expectation for this club. Given the state of the roster — this team might have the worst bench in the NBA, even worse than the L.A. Lakers or Memphis Grizzlies — that was a longshot as soon as the goal was created. But hobble Curry, and it’s over.

Coaches don’t tend to fare well when expectations aren’t met, but Jackson put himself in a bad spot by writing a check his team probably can’t cash. The coach seems to be tight with the front office, and no one thinks Joe Lacob will give two straight coaches one-and-out tenures. (Keith Smart coached the team last season and was fired to make way for Jackson. Smart had presided over a 10-win improvement.) But this is a bad situation to start Jackson’s coaching career, and unless Curry heals quickly, the season’s on the fast track to the lottery in Oakland.

    DALLAS —
It didn’t take long for Heat coach Erik Spoelstra to develop an early theme to this season.

In fact, it was a simple pregame act that set a symbolic tone, rather than the clever phrase or repurposed military reference that tended to inspire last season’s rallying cries.

Before the Mavericks had their brief, faintly emotional and surprisingly traditional banner-raising ceremony, the Heat quietly stepped away, heading to the hallways of the American Airlines Center rather than watch highlights of memorable Mavericks moments produced on Miami’s home floor.

It wasn’t a dismissive act. It wasn’t a defiant act. It wasn’t even an uncommon act.

It was simply an expression of what the Heat is at the moment: a team playing in the present and looking toward the future.

Reliving the past isn’t what this team wants to do, regardless if every outsider believes last season’s failure is what should motivate this group every moment of every game.

“It’s not about last season’s storylines,” Spoelstra said. “We already left last year behind.”

It’s not only an intelligent way to approach this second season of Mega-Heat, but it’s also largely true that this season should feel like a different experience for the Heat.

DIFFERENT FEEL

Last season was about learning each other and learning on the fly. It was about living up to mostly self-created expectations. It was about fighting off critics and adjusting to elevated scrutiny. It was as much about nonbasketball storylines as it was actual basketball.

This season has a different feel.

It’s about adjustments to last year, yes. But it’s not about redemption or attempting to right a wrong.

This is about growth and reaching a potential the team saw only flashes of last season.

And in this delayed opening game of the season, the one that didn’t start with a group of Heat players strolling down bitter-memory lane, the Heat displayed just how different this team can be.

“We played exactly how we wanted to play,” Chris Bosh said.

It’s a frightening thought that this team can say, with such short preparation time, that it played a game exactly as planned.

But you could see it from the start, with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade continuing the approach established during the preseason. A game dominated by a quick pace, aggressive attacks, ball movement and, of course, both LeBron and Wade spending extra time in the low-post rather than navigating through multiple defenders before even reaching the paint.

This was a team that clearly wasn’t concerned about external chatter, which affected last year’s Heat. This was just a team determined to perfect its style of play, and a few individuals determined to display shiny new elements of their game.

When you have those thoughts running through your head, it’s easy to shake off the past and concentrate on the right now.

“This was about us,” Spoelstra said. “About our journey.”

WHAT’S AHEAD

If this is the version of the Heat we’re going to see all season — and it’s impossible to determine considering how ragged the re-tooled Mavericks looked on a day that was as much about celebration for them as it was competition — then the rest of the NBA should’ve spent at least one brief moment shuddering on Christmas Day in anticipation of what’s to come.

Gotta run!.

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — Hundreds of Miami Heat fans left their presents at home to spend Christmas Day watching the Heat in the first official game of the season.

Fans packed Miller’s Ale House on Northeast 163rd Street in North Miami Beach, Sunday, to watch the Miami Heat take on the Dallas Mavericks. “Open your gift and then come to the sports bar,” said Heat fan Eric Veizga Jr. “We’ve been craving basketball and it’s finally here.”

Many patrons didn’t mind leaving their homes on Christmas Day to cheer on the Heat. “Well we did the family thing last night so today it’s me and my dad, hanging out, having some beers. We’re still doing the family thing I guess,” said a Heat fan.

Restaurants geared up for the big day, knowing the game would bring in the crowds. “Of course we weren’t going to miss a chance to have everyone here for the Heat game, ” said Trent Prichard of North Miami Beach Ale House. “Everybody loves to come out. As you can see we fill up for all of the Heat games.”

As the Heat’s lead in the game became bigger, the crowd became louder, showing signs that basketball fans were more than ready to get the season started. “I’m pretty excited, you know, basketball is something we look forward to, it’s a big part of our life,” said Heat fan Yali Goldenberg.

With the blow out win Sunday against the reigning champions, Heat fans are confident this is Miami’s season to win it all. “Honestly, I see them losing not that many games. I think they’re going to do very great this year. They look like they’re hungry, they’re ready for it,” said Heat fan Alex Bello.

The Heat’s home opener is on Tuesday Dec. 27 against the Boston Celtics.

The Miami Heat ruined the Dallas Mavericks’ championship party, handing them a humiliating Christmas Day beat down. Dirk Nowitzki and company were all smiles prior to the game (Mavericks received their rings and hoisted the 2011 championship banner in the pregame festivities), but the smiles didn’t last long, as the Heat cruised on to the 105-94 victory. With the win, the Heat break their 14 game regular season losing streak to the Mavericks.

The Heat wasted no time against the team that ended their championship dreams last season, taking control in the very first half of the game and never looking back. By halftime, the Heat had a 21 point lead, and things only got worse for the Mavericks in the second half. The Mavericks did try to fight back in the final quarter, but by then, half of their fans had already deserted them and it was too little too late.

Solid defense has been a staple of the “big three” era Heat and they obviously haven’t lost a step. The Heat’s defense smothered the Mavericks throughout the game, holding them to 38 percent shooting from the field. Even Nowitzki had problems dealing with the Heat’s defense, converting on only 6 of his 15 attempts from the field.

LeBron James made an emphatic statement in Miami’s first game of the 2011/12 NBA season, dropping 37 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists against the Mavericks.

Dwyane Wade wasn’t playing around with the Mavericks either, finishing with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists of his own.
