DALLAS — Throughout his career, Dallas Mavericks reserve forward Brian Cardinal has become known as “the custodian.” An odd moniker, to be sure.

DALLAS — Throughout his career, Dallas Mavericks reserve forward Brian Cardinal has become known as “the custodian.”

An odd moniker, to be sure.

But after his blocking foul, which easily could have gone the other way, against the Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade with 4:01 remaining in the first quarter of Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night in Dallas, Cardinal might now be known as “the eliminator.”

The collision sent Wade to the locker room for treatment of a hip contusion that kept him out for the rest of the first quarter, part of the second and much of the third.

After the Mavericks’ 112-103 win that gave Dallas a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, Wade wasn’t about to disclose the severity of his injury and danced around questions about his health as the Heat literally limp back home for Sunday’s Game 6, and a possible Game 7 on Tuesday night.

“You know I’m not going to do that. I’m not going to talk about injuries,” Wade said Thursday night when asked to describe the injury and how it occurred. “It was unfortunate. I had to leave the game, but I came back and finished.”

That he did, leading the Heat with 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 10-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra said he wasn’t quite sure Wade would return in the second half.

“(The medical staff) said, ‘He can’t start this half. We’ll let you know in a few minutes whether he can go or not,’ ” Spoelstra said. “My plan was for him not to go. I didn’t even see him on the bench when he came back.

“We went on from there; we still had an opportunity to close this out. We weren’t able to do it, and so now we go back to Miami. We wouldn’t have it any other way; we worked extremely hard to get that home court. Nothing that we’ve achieved this year has been easy, so we’re certainly not going to start now.”

Wade returned with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter and the Heat trailing 80-71. He scored 10 points the rest of the way but gave no indication whether it was difficult to return to the flow.

“Once you’re on the court, you’re on the court,” he said. “I don’t have no excuses; I was on the court. I was able to help my team get an opportunity to win, and I’ll be fine Sunday.”

SICK JOKE: After their shootaround Thursday morning before Game 5, Miami’s LeBron James and Wade were filmed “coughing” as they walked off the court.

They apparently were mocking forward Dirk Nowitzki, who led the Mavericks to a win in Game 4 in Dallas despite fighting a fever, sinus infection and 101-degree fever.

The Heat duo pretended to cough and wheeze and made jokes about the Texas heat.

CAN’T CLOSE: Once again, with James’ two fourth-quarter points as proof, the Heat has had difficulty closing out the Mavericks at crunch time, including letting a 15-piont lead slip with 7:30 remaining in Game 2 in Miami.

James, for example, has gone 2-of-4, 0-of-4, 1-of-3, 0-of-1 and 1-of-4 in the five fourth quarters in the series.

“We’ve had a few breakdowns late in games in this series that we didn’t have in the first three series, so it’s something we know we can do,” James said. “We just got to push through it. At this point we have no choice, honestly. We got two games left, and we worked hard all year to get home-court advantage, so we have to take advantage of it.”

Nowitzki, on the other hand, has outscored James 52-11 in the fourth quarter in the five games.

“It’s unfortunate,” Wade said. “Obviously, we put ourselves in a position on the road, especially, to win games. We haven’t been able to do that. That’s been our staple; that’s the reason we’re here.

“The good thing about life, and the good thing about this game, we get another opportunity, another crack at it. We know it’s the thing that’s going to either lose or win us a championship. It comes down to either not closing out games or closing it out. We have another game Sunday to be able to do that.”

MUST-SEE TV — AGAIN: Game 5 on ABC delivered a 12.6 rating, making it the highest-rated program Thursday night.

It was the 24th consecutive time the Finals have generated the highest-rated program in prime time. The 12.6 rating was the second-highest for a Game 5 in the past seven years, trailing last year’s 12.8 rating for the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.

What do you guys think about this.

DALLAS -- LeBron James doesn’t think the pressure is getting to him. No, that’s not correct. He doesn’t believe the pressure of the NBA Finals is getting to him

    DALLAS —
LeBron James doesn’t think the pressure is getting to him.

No, that’s not correct.

He doesn’t believe the pressure of the NBA Finals is getting to him.

No, no. That’s not quite right either.

James knows the pressure isn’t getting to him as the Heat faces elimination after back-to-back losses in Dallas.

After Thursday’s 112-103 loss, one that pushed the Heat to the edge of elimination, James was asked if he thought the pressure of the Finals and the pressure of fourth quarters were causing him to struggle. He then proceeded to offer up an interesting three-part answer.

“No, I don’t think so,” James said.

Self-correction.

“I don’t believe so,” James said.

One more try.

“I know I’m not,” James said.

Think, believe and know: There’s a big difference between those words, especially for a basketball world searching for reasons why James, arguably the best and most gifted player in the NBA, has suddenly gone into hibernation in fourth quarters of the NBA Finals. In the first five games of the Finals, James has scored 11 fourth-quarter points.

On Tuesday, James didn’t score in the fourth quarter, and Dallas tied the series at 2-2. On Thursday, James managed one field goal in four attempts. Still not enough. Dallas now holds a 3-2 edge and can clinch the best-of-7 series Sunday with a victory in Game 6.

Another sign of offensive frustration: James has only attempted 16 free throws in the Finals.

After Tuesday’s Game 4 loss, James acknowledged that his lack of offense contributed to the defeat. That wasn’t the case Thursday, though. James said the Heat had more than enough offense to defeat the Mavericks in Game 5 despite his two-point contribution in crunch time.

“I don’t think it was a case of offense again [Thursday night],” said James, who filled up the stat sheet with a triple-double, the Heat’s first in a postseason game. “There was enough offensive play. We shot 52 percent; they shot 56 percent. We scored 103 points; they scored 112. The offense wasn’t the problem.”

So, what’s the problem?

According to James, it’s the team’s suddenly sub-par defense.

As the series returns to Miami for the Heat’s last stand, the home team will attempt to return to its roots as well. If the Heat is to defeat the Mavericks twice in a row at AmericanAirlines Arena, then defense will be the reason why, said James.

“It starts defensively,” he said. “We’ve had a few breakdowns late in the games in this series that we didn’t have in the first three series. So, it’s something we know we can do.

“We just got to push through it. At this point, we have no choice, honestly.”

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra tried his best after Thursday’s loss to deflect the focus on the team’s recent struggles to the encouraging fact that the Heat now has a chance to close out the series at home. Game 2’s loss to Dallas was the Heat’s first home loss of the postseason.

“We’re going home, and we wouldn’t have it any other way than the hard way,” Spoelstra said. “This is an opportunity for us. That’s why you play a seven-game series. You got to play it out. And this is where we feel comfortable.”

Like James, forward Chris Bosh recognized the Heat’s defensive lapses Thursday and pointed to a new sense of urgency.

“This team has more offensive firepower than any team we’ve played,” Bosh said. “I mean, for the most part, we’ve been doing a good job defensively, especially in the fourth quarter. We had a lapse [Thursday]. And you know it won’t happen again. It can’t happen again.”

There’s a big difference between knowing and believing. Just ask James.

Thanks for reading! .

    DALLAS —
For the game’s biggest star, it was a self-proclaimed career-defining game.

For the 20,000 clad in Mavericks royal blue, it was considered the game that would sustain their championship hopes.

For the NBA, it was a continuation of a Finals that has been nothing short of brilliant through the first five dramatic contests.

And for everyone in the American Airlines Center, it was as tense a setting as it gets for basketball.

The result was an absolute frenzy of baskets scored, a dizzying pace drenched in desperation.

In the end, LeBron James didn’t shrink under the extreme pressure. At least his swollen stat line wouldn’t suggest that.

A triple-double in a critical loss. It’s becoming a playoff trend for James.

Last time it happened, James and his Cavaliers were eliminated. This time, with the Heat losing 112-103 on Thursday, it merely puts the Heat one game away from elimination.

Game 6 is in Miami on Sunday.

From before the opening tip Thursday, it seemed every set of eyes was focused on James. The Heat’s polarizing superstar came off a historically bad playoff performance, by his standards. Tuesday’s Game 4 featured a detached, distance, passive James. It was a version of him that’s never been seen in a Heat uniform. When it was over, James had just eight points, the first time he had been held to single digits in 90 career playoff game. And with it came 48 hours of questions about his state of mind, about his ability to carry the Heat, about his heart.

It led to James admonishing himself for an “unacceptable” performance. And he began Thursday by calling Game 5 the biggest game of his career.

“I understand what is at stake,” James said Thursday morning. “This is a big game, probably the biggest game of my life. I’m approaching it that way. Not probably — it is.”

It’s no surprise James would put this kind of pressure on himself. It’s the kind of pressure he essentially asked for when he made the much-maligned decision to come to Miami.

However, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra hoped that the player with the largest target on his back would not think of the game in immeasurable terms.

“Our guys have been very good about managing all those emotions and compartmentalizing outside distractions, storylines, et cetera,” Spoelstra said. “… And we can’t think about … overwhelming thoughts.”

This process began with James forcing himself into the action. Rather than allow the game to come to him, the way he did to a fault in Game 4, he was active, aggressive, alert.

His first basket came on a slam dunk off a full-court pass from Dwyane Wade. He muscled his way to another easy basket after an offensive rebound. He was attacking the glass as well, grabbing six early rebounds and setting a dominant tone for the Heat on the boards.

And yet, the Heat couldn’t translate that into much success. Not when the Mavericks were experiencing one of those can’t-miss games.

Not when Dirk Nowitzki, arguably the most frightening offensive threat in the league when he’s got it going, was dropping in rainbow three-pointers as the shot clock expired. Not when Dallas was hitting 60 percent from the floor for most of the game. Not when Dallas shot an insane 68.4 percent from three-point range.

And especially not when the Heat’s most dangerous threat in this series, Wade, was injured.

Wade bruised his hip so badly in the opening quarter during a collision with Dallas’ Brian Cardinal that he fell to the hardwood in agony during a timeout.

Wade went to the locker room to be treated, came back on the floor moments later but was still affected by the painful right hip.

Wade even stayed behind in the locker room to start the second half in order to have his hip treated.

That scenario only added to the pressure on James.

The biggest game of his career now didn’t include the player he abandoned Cleveland to team with. At least not the version of Wade whom we had gotten used to in this series, when he was averaging 29.8 points in the first four games. Not until the end, anyway, but how could James anticipate that?

James didn’t force the issue despite the natural instinct to do so in that scenario. He played forcefully but still managed to dissect the Mavericks’ defense on occasion and finished with a triple-double, his first in these playoffs and his first since his last playoff game as a Cleveland Cavalier.

Back then, in last year’s Game 6 against the Celtics, James’ impressive statistical showing resulted in a loss, which ultimately led to his departure to Miami.

This time, he still has a shot at ultimate redemption.

That’s all for today.

Mere hours before the Heat’s Game 2 collapse that immediately fell into the all-timer category because of the stage and the stakes, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was praising his big man Chris Bosh.

Spoelstra was recalling how surprised he was to find that Bosh was as competitive as he was. A coach who has been associated with Alonzo Mourning, Dwyane Wade, Tim Hardaway and LeBron James in his tenure with Miami called Bosh one of the most competitive players he has known.

If that’s the case, then the past two days have been pure misery for Bosh. It must have been difficult for Bosh to live with himself after the errors he made, the bucket he allowed, the foul he didn’t commit and the overall performance he offered.

For the player who has been called by his own teammates the most important player on the Heat, Bosh didn’t hold up his end of the bargain in Game 2. And frankly, that’s putting it politely.

Now, the least heralded member of the Big 3 is back in his hometown of Dallas, probably sulking, probably avoiding conversations with anyone he might recognize.

But he’s back with a chance to redeem himself. It’s an act he has accomplished before in these playoffs, reestablishing himself after a dreadful showing. This one, though, will be his most challenging recovery yet.

Dusting himself off after falling so horrifically in Thursday’s Game 2 might just be the ultimate test of Bosh’s first year in Miami. And given how much he already has been through, that’s saying quite a lot.

It wasn’t just the final seconds, although that will be the most memorable and most error-filled sequence if this loss turns into anything more than just a one-game setback.

It was the entire showing. In the previous game, a game where Bosh was critical of himself for making just 5 of his 18 field-goal attempts, he was far better than the shooting percentage indicated.

Bosh was aggressive in that contest, getting to the foul line 12 times, coming down with five offensive rebounds and nine total, dishing off three assists, swatting that J.J. Barea shot deep into the crowd and never turning the ball over once.

The Heat will live with misses from Bosh if the rest of his game is that complete.

Entering Thursday’s follow-up, there was no indication he would be anything but that player again. After all, since that emotionally overwhelming Game 3 in Boston when he managed just six points and five rebounds, Bosh has been the picture of consistency.

He followed that game up with a perfectly timed 20-and-12 game that included the game-sealing tip-in.

He had two a pair of 30-point games against Chicago, making Carlos Boozer look foolish on the court and for not including him in the list of Miami’s great players. He admitted then to being somewhat motivated by that omission by Boozer.

Maybe someone on the Mavericks needs to insult him. Or maybe that offensive performance Thursday will be enough of a stimulus.

Granted, Bosh tends to get lost in the Heat offense when Dwyane Wade or LeBron James, or both, are having one of their huge scoring nights. And Wade was on a tear through three-and-a-half quarters Thursday, essentially making Bosh a nonfactor for several segments of the game.

When he did get opportunities, he didn’t appear confident in his shot, falling in love instead with the pump fake. When he did drive, he was searching for contact rather than finishing with conviction.

Gotta run!.

The Heat won the Eastern Conference finals on Thursday at United Center with a hard-fought 83-80 victory against the Chicago Bulls. Miami now plays an old foe, the Mavs, in the NBA Finals, which will begin Tuesday at AmericanAirlines Arena.

The Heat beat the Bulls 4-1 in the best-of-7 series with a wild comeback on Thursday that lifted Miami to its first NBA Finals since breaking Dallas’ hearts in six games in 2006. The Heat broke the hearts of thousands in Chicago on Thursday.

The United Center crowd was deflated with 25 seconds left when Bulls guard Derrick Rose, the youngest MVP in NBA history, missed the second of two free throws to tie the score at 81. The Heat trailed by nine with less than three minutes to play but rallied with an amazing 16-2 run that ended with a midrange jumper by LeBron James with 29.5 seconds left.

Heat forward Chris Bosh made a pair of free throws with 16.8 seconds left, and James blocked Rose’s desperation three-point attempt to tie the score at the buzzer. James and Haslem, who doubled-teamed Rose at the end of the game, immediately hugged after capping the unlikely finish.

For the majority of Thursday’s Game 5, the Heat played some of its worst basketball of the season. Wade played poorly for three quarters but came alive at the end. The performance was similar to his effort in Game 4 when he failed to score in the second half but was key in overtime.

Wade favored his left shoulder throughout the game and received treatment on it during the third quarter. He finished with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting. He looked in mint condition with the game on the line, though. His four-point play with 1:30 cut the Bulls lead to three points.

Wade’s brilliance was sandwiched by a pair of three-pointers by LeBron James. His second three tied the game at 79 with 1:01 left. His midrange jumper gave the Heat the lead for good. James finished with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-19 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds and six assists. Chris Bosh, whose two free throws gave the Heat an 83-81 lead with 16.8 second left, finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The United Center was a cauldron of noise with 3:53 left in the fourth quarter on Thursday after Ronnie Brewer’s three-pointer to give the Bulls a nine-point lead but was silent in the final moments as the Heat took a moment to celebrate before refocusing for the finals.

Wade was benched midway through the third quarter after committing his ninth turnover of the game. He started the fourth quarter on the bench with a team trainer stretching Wade’s left shoulder. His nine turnovers in less than three quarters tied a Heat postseason record.

Wade entered the fourth quarter after a timeout with 10 minutes to play. His mid-range jumper from the wing cut the Bulls’ lead to 69-63 with 7:20 left. It was the Heat’s second field goal of the quarter and just its eighth of the second half. The Heat shot 33.3 percent in the third quarter but managed to outscore Chicago 19-17.

The third quarter highlighted the physical nature of the series. Carlos Boozer clotheslined LeBron James during the period and whistled for a flagrant foul. The Bulls shot just 23.8 percent in the period but managed to hold onto his lead with an inspired defensive effort.

Wade was called for a rare traveling violation with 6:20 left in the first half. The turnover was the Heat’s fifth of the first half and led to a mid-range jumper from Carlos Boozer that gave Miami a 12-point lead. On the Heat’s next possession, Wade again was whistled for traveling. The back-to-back turnovers highlighted a first half were the concentration that gave the Het a 3-1 lead in the series was suddenly lacking.

Wade finished the first half with six turnovers. Overall, the Heat had eight turnovers compared to just six assists and was out-rebounded by the Bulls 23-14.

The Bulls built a seven-point lead in the first quarter behind 19 combined points from Derrick Rose and Luol Deng. Deng’s three-pointer with a minute left in the period put Chicago ahead 25-18 but James answered with a three-pointer to end the quarter. Chicago shot 47.8 percent from the floor to begin the game while holding the Heat to 7-of-18 shooting from the field.

MIAMI—

                    Next stop, Chicago.

Finding clarity instead of extended rest, the Miami Heat now have a definitive destination for the franchise’s fourth appearance in the Eastern Conference finals.

The Chicago Bulls took care of that with Thursday night’s 93-73 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena, in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Taking that series 4-2, the Bulls will host the Heat on Sunday night at the United Center in Game 1 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals.

Chicago secured that advantage by finishing four games ahead of the Heat during the regular season, including a 3-0 regular-season sweep achieved by a combined margin of eight points.

“Obviously, it’s the next step, so we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said after Thursday’s victory.

Just as Heat players tuned in Thursday, so did the Bulls on Wednesday night, when the Heat closed out the Boston Celtics 4-1 in the other East semifinal with a 97-87 victory.

“We all knew they were going to be better in the playoffs,” Bulls forward Luol Deng said. “The season is so long; you have ups and downs. But they have great players.

“When it comes down to locking down and focusing, you’re going to get their best. That’s really where Miami is at right now.”

Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, who ended the two-year run of Heat forward LeBron James as NBA Most Valuable Player, said he was duly impressed with the Heat’s performance.

“They put on a show at the end of the game. It was exciting,” Rose said of the Heat’s 16-0 game-ending run against the Celtics on Wednesday night, with James scoring the final 10 points of that surge. “They’ve been playing well. It’s hard to stop them when those guys got it going.”

Thursday, it was the Bulls who looked unstoppable.

“It’s going to be a great matchup,” said Bulls power forward Carlos Boozer, who led the Bulls with 23 points and 10 rebounds Thursday. “We look forward to it, and it’ll be fun.

“They just got done beating a championship-caliber team in Boston.”

Of the Heat possibly being viewed as the favorite despite being the road team, Rose said following Thursday’s game, “We’re fine with that. We put a lot of work in this year. To us, we’re not here by surprise.

“We know we have something special in front of us.”

Had the Bulls lost Thursday, the Heat would have been idle until Wednesday. Instead, the East finals will have extended breaks between the first three games, with Game 2 scheduled for Wednesday at the United Center and then Game 3, the first at AmericanAirlines Arena, not scheduled until Sunday, May 22. Only then will the series revert to the typical every-other-night schedule starting with Game 4 on May 24 at AmericanAirlines Arena.

If nothing else, the schedule takes into account the typically late-arriving South Florida crowds, with the three games scheduled for AmericanAirlines Arena, including the May 28 Game 6, scheduled for 8:30 p.m. tip-offs.

Although the Bulls swept the three-game season series, each game was competitive.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Scouting report: Friday night is the second-to-last regular-season home game for the Heat, which is 3-0 against the Bobcats this season. A victory would mark the Heat’s 11th regular-season sweep of an opponent this season. … Heat guard Dwyane Wade (thigh bruise) is questionable.

The simple act of straightening his leg caused Heat guard Dwyane Wade severe pain Monday.

Discomfort persisted Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Wade watched as his team lost an important game to the Milwaukee Bucks.

On Thursday, Wade indicated he could have played against the Bucks but didn’t want to be a “liability” on the defensive end of the court.

The point is this: Days matter more than games at this point in the regular season. With the playoffs fast approaching, health means more than a loss, playoff seeding and potential home-court advantage in the second round of the postseason.

Four games — nine or 10 days — remain until the Heat begins the playoffs. Miami (54-24) plays the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday at AmericanAirlines Arena. It’s the Heat’s second-to-last home game of the regular season and Wade, who bruised his thigh Sunday against the Nets, didn’t know Thursday if he would be ready for a return to the court.

What Wade does know: He’s ready for the playoffs to start.

On Thursday inside the Heat’s practice facility at AmericanAirlines Arena, Wade jokingly asked reporters how many games were left in the regular season. In other words, he has playoff fever.

“How many games?” Wade said. “Four? Five? Please bring them on. Let’s get them over with and get to the playoffs.

“We’re ready.”

Wade didn’t practice with his team Thursday but did participate in a few exercises to test the strength of his leg, which he said has lacked “explosion” since colliding with Nets reserve Travis Outlaw. Wade injured his thigh in the first half against the Nets and returned to finish the game after being evaluated by the Heat’s training staff.

The next step in Wade’s return will take place Friday morning before the team’s shootaround. If the thigh bruise responds well overnight, then Wade might be available. If not, he will watch his team from the bench once again.

“Monday, I wasn’t positive at all about even Friday, that’s how much pain I was in,” Wade said. “But [Wednesday] was a good day treatment-wise and [Thursday] I woke up feeling even better, so it’s been progressing every day — it’s better and better. It’s just about when I feel I can get out there and do the things I do.”

The Heat struggled Wednesday without its star guard, who is third in the NBA in scoring (27.5 points a game). Miami shot 40.5 percent and, defensively, allowed the Bucks to gain confidence throughout the game with open driving lanes to the basket. Milwaukee finished with 42 points in the paint.

“Sometimes we take the hard way,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “[Wednesday] night was the hard way. So we had to come back, watch some film, learn from our mistakes, get back together and get ready for a win.”

The Heat entered Thursday a half game behind the Celtics for second in the Eastern Conference standings. The Celtics played the Bulls on Thursday night in an important game, but Wade said the game’s outcome would not have an impact on whether he returns against the Bobcats on Friday.

The Celtics, 3-0 against the Heat, hold a playoff tie-breaker if both teams have identical records at the end of the regular season.

“We’re just ready to get to the playoffs and ready to get to that time of the year — what we all came together for,” Wade said.

MIAMI— LeBron James requested privacy. His boss, though, knows better. Not this season

MIAMI—

LeBron James requested privacy. His boss, though, knows better.

Not this season. Not with a roster that features James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh and the constant glare of national exposure.

So in the wake of the arrest of James’ mother, Gloria Marie James, over an early-morning dispute with a valet-parking attendant at Fontainbleau Hotel on Miami Beach, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra spent Thursday discussing distractions.

“A lot of times there’s some topics or storylines that are out there that we have to address,” Spoelstra said, “but it has steeled us to the point that we understand we’re the voices that matter, the guys in the locker room, we’re the family, we’re the brotherhood.”

While players attempted to keep the conversation on the playoff race and team issues, such as Wade’s recovery from the thigh injury that sidelined him from Wednesday’s loss to the visiting Bucks, the focus following Thursday’s practice was the episode that left James’ mother charged with simple battery and disorderly intoxication.

“It’s a sensitive subject. It’s a personal matter and it’s being taken care of,” the Heat All-Star forward said of the incident involving his mother. “It is my life and there’s certain things you have to do deal with.

“The people around me are helping me and are helping her and we’ll be fine.”

James made it clear he was not with his mother at the time.

“No sir, I was at home,” he said. “Tough game last night, I decided to get my rest.”

Teammates offered their support.

“You understand in life things happens, whether you’re in the limelight or not, you’re always going to have family things that’s going to happen and you’re going to have to tend to ‘em and you’re going to have to deal with ‘em,” said Wade, who has endured a messy and very-public divorce and child-custody case over the past two years. “Our job in here is just continue to focus on each other, focus on being who we are, doing what we always do, that’s come in enjoying basketball, enjoying each other, making each other laugh.

“And if someone needs you, if you see someone needs your support, you be there for them.”

Bosh said it is essential that the gym remain a refuge.

“This is a place for basketball,” he said amid the questions about Thursday’s incident. “That’s how we always handle it.”

The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. The Heat lost 90-85 to Milwaukee at AmericanAirlines Arena in a game that ended just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“A lot of these other things are ancillary distractions if we let them be,” Spoelstra said. “If we don’t, then we can focus on what’s real.”

Spoelstra said it has become easier to move beyond distractions because of the intense focus on his team these past few months.

“I met with every single player during the offseason,” he said. “As a coaching staff, we talked about it. We knew there would be heightened speculation and interest about our team, both negative and positive.”

“We talked about how we keep it about us and what’s real and what’s not real. And the majority of those things are not real.”

Thursday, though, was real, at least the unexpected media crush on the practice court.

“Now,” Spoelstra said to the assembled mass, “did we anticipate that it would be to this extent? Probably not. But after the first month of the season, once we got our bearings with it, we were able to adjust and in many regards it’s helped us.”

James patiently answered each question about the incident, with Wade insisting the team remains focused on next week’s start of the NBA playoffs.

“Our team is fine,” Wade said. “We’re together. We understand that things are going to happen. We haven’t had that many issues here.”

Chris Bosh called them “bro hugs.”

Moments after Thursday’s game, the Heat’s star players wrapped their arms around one another to celebrate a hard-fought victory over the Lakers and the end of a five-game losing streak. From tears of frustration to hugs of joy, it has been an emotional week for the Heat. The encore: The next eight days could be just as dramatic.

It starts on Saturday against the Memphis Grizzlies, who defeated the Heat earlier this season. It was a memorable game. Rudy Gay scored the winner at the buzzer with a fade-away shot over LeBron James. Minutes earlier, Heat forward Udonis Haslem was carried off the court by teammates after sustaining a serious foot injury.

A home game against the Grizzlies might not register as strongly on the hype meter as a visit from the Lakers, but Memphis is playing well. Already this month, the Grizzlies — currently eighth in the Western Conference standings — have earned victories over the Spurs, Mavericks and Thunder.

After Memphis, the Heat concludes its six-game home stand with games against the Spurs and Thunder. Following those difficult tests, the Heat completes its weeks-long gauntlet of games against teams with winning records with an away-home back-to-back against the Hawks and Nuggets.

In other words, the Heat — 2-6 in its last eight games — can’t afford to cruise into the playoffs just yet. With a challenging set of games awaiting the team, the Heat tempered its important win against the Lakers on Thursday night with a measured perspective.

“It’s one game,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We certainly wanted to get over this initial hump. We have to keep moving forward. The important thing about going through a stretch like that is that the guys did not collapse.”

James sarcastically joked after the game that the victory against the Lakers was “great” but did nothing to improve the Heat’s record (5-13) in games decided by five points or less because the Heat won by six points.

“I think our bench gave us what we needed in them and they made shots,” James said.

“Everyone just did a little extra. Everyone just stayed in the moment and everyone was ready for when their number was called.”

Major contributions from the Heat’s role players on Thursday:

• After going 1-12 from the field and 0-6 from three-point range in losses to the Bulls and Trail Blazers earlier this week, Heat swingman Mike Miller had 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting against the Lakers. He was 2 of 3 from three-point range. Miller also had seven rebounds.

“It was great to see him step up from all this swirl,” Spoelstra said.

“It’s great when people go through all the adversity, speculation and conjecture that’s out there, because that just forces you to focus more.”

• Point guard Mike Bibby made his most substantial contribution since joining the Heat, making two important three-pointers in the fourth quarter.

• Juwan Howard played well in the first quarter after Bosh picked up two quick fouls. Howard also came off the bench in the third and fourth quarters.

• Erick Dampier started at center but Zydrunas Ilgauskas played the most minutes at the position, contributing four points and three rebounds in 25 minutes despite a sore right elbow.

• Now sharing time at point guard with Bibby, Mario Chalmers is playing some of his best basketball of the season. On Thursday, Chalmers was 3 of 6 from three-point range and also had five rebounds.

“When [Wade, James and Bosh] have other options, they don’t have to do everything by themselves,” Chalmers said. “It makes our team a whole lot better.”

By Ethan J. Skolnick

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

MIAMI — They came together at the free throw line, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, to stop and wrap their arms around each other. Then Chris Bosh joined in. They came together to celebrate the successful end of a night in which their team could have again come apart.

“A little extra meaning,” Bosh said of the win. “I hope nobody reads too much into the hugs. You know, we like each other.”

And, as a Heat fan, you had to like how Thursday went. It was big, not just because of what the Heat accomplished – beating the Lakers for a second time, 94-88 – but because of the way the Heat did it. With less than its two biggest stars’ offensive best. Down the stretch. With so much noise on the streets and, no doubt, in their heads.

“For our mind and our psyche, it was very important,” Bosh said.

This was big, too, because it will quiet the cackling for a bit, if certainly not forever. This was big, because it shows the Heat – never mind the outside world – what it can be. It reminds these players what they believed when they came together this summer, that they would be capable of beating the best.

The Lakers hold that title until someone else takes the trophy. Yet this result was not a fluke, no more than it was on Christmas, when the Heat won more comfortably. In that contest, the Lakers didn’t truly compete, but Thursday they did, and they had come in clicking, on an eight-game roll. They came in arrogant and judgmental too, with Phil Jackson remarking before Thursday’s rematch that he liked watching San Antonio and Boston, but not the Heat: “I’m not a big fan of the style Miami plays. I like to see everybody involved.” He compared the Heat’s style to “Xbox games or whatever those games are when you play 1-on-1.”

But a funny thing happens to the Heat when it plays Jackson’s Lakers. Miami plays more of the style that the coach appreciates. It moves the ball. It spreads the scoring. Jackson said after Wednesday’s practice that, basketball is “about a whole team, I don’t think it’s about two people,” and “I think that might be the problem” with the Heat.

Thursday, for Miami, it was about the whole team.

It was about Bosh validating his plea for more touches by making the most of them, driving even more aggressively and consistently than he did while scoring the same total (24) as on Christmas. It was about Mike Miller outscoring the Lakers’ supreme sixth man, Lamar Odom. It was about Mike Bibby smoothing out the offense in crunch time, while making a couple of threes. It was about the Heat’s centers and power forwards – yes, even Juwan Howard – making the Lakers’ talented big men work.

It was about Wade, doing what it took. He has not shot well against the league’s elite this season, and followed a 5-of-17 on Christmas by sinking just 6-of-19 to start on Thursday. On some other nights this season, subpar offensive efforts have distracted him on defense. Thursday, that wasn’t so. He made Kobe Bryant (8-for-21) work from start to finish, limiting the All-Star’s opportunities and forcing him further and further out.

It was about James, not shooting all that well either, but frequently making the right play rather than the impossible one.

And, yes, it was about coach Erik Spoelstra, surviving the storm another day. On Wednesday, his immediate boss, Pat Riley, spoke to a reporter while watching the Big East Tournament. He took a question about Spoelstra’s status, and said to “write it off” the controversy, attributing it to “the media being neurotic. It’s their need to make a story, create a story, and make that story come true. And that ain’t going to happen. Write it off.”

Write it off.

Perhaps.

Write off the Heat? After a big win that looked real, maybe not yet.

What do you guys think about this.

MIAMI — Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson doesn’t watch much of the NBA when it’s not for scouting purposes, preferring to watch the NHL or his favorite TV show, “Dexter,” in his free time.

But when he does tune into basketball, it’s not to watch the Miami Heat.

“I enjoy watching the Spurs play, the style they play at. I enjoy watching Boston play; I love the style that they play,” Jackson said before the Lakers’ game against the Heat on Thursday. “I’m not a big fan of the style that Miami plays.”

The 65-year old coach went on to liken Miami’s team approach to that of someone playing a video game.

“Their basketball is very much in standing with Xbox games, or whatever those games are when you play one-on-one,” Jackson said.

“Basketball is not a one-on-one game. It’s a team game.”

Jackson has had more than a few critical thoughts about the Heat in recent months, on topics that include how their roster was assembled last summer, coach Erik Spoelstra’s future with the team and the tears Miami players shed in the locker room following their loss to Chicago.

He did, however, say Thursday that Spoelstra is “doing a good job.”

Rather than criticize the Heat’s coach, Jackson’s target was Miami’s system — or lack thereof.

“I like to see everybody involved in the game, so I think that’s really important in basketball,” Jackson said. “That’s what I try to preach as a basketball coach even though we have a guy that dominates the ball in Kobe [Bryant].”

HEAT INDEX

Jackson hinted at the same sentiment before the Lakers practiced Wednesday when he called out LeBron James and Dwyane Wade when he said, “I think it’s about the whole team. I don’t think it’s about two people. I think that might be the problem.”

He then shared the thought process behind his team-oriented triangle offense.

“It’s about the team relying on the system that you’re going to play and then everybody kind of pays credence to the system that you want to play in,” Jackson said Wednesday. “My coach [Red Holzman] said, there’s only two things that make sense in basketball: Play defense together as a team and hit the open man. That’s the thing that makes the most sense in basketball. It’s not really that complicated a game.”

Jackson is hardly the first to suggest that the Heat rely too heavily on James and Wade, who came into Thursday ranked second and fourth respectively in the league scoring stats.

After that, the Heat’s offensive consistency has been inconsistency, something Chris Bosh and other Miami players have acknowledged as a problem.

“I don’t really care what people say about us, personally,” Wade said earlier Thursday, a few hours before Jackson spoke.

Miami came into Thursday on a five-game slide. The Lakers started the day as the NBA’s hottest team, winners of eight straight.

Erik Spoelstra has no one else to turn to. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have alternatives.

While the composition of this Miami Heat roster may effectively strip away the Executive of the Year that was all but ceded to Pat Riley in July, that doesn’t mean this same mix can’t be something better, or at least different, depending on the perspective.

Fortunately (and that word certainly has not been mentioned much in relation to the Heat in recent weeks), there are options.

Unfortunately (a more common refrain), the options are being raised by players, not coach.

How much Spoelstra bends, if he bends at all, will go a long way toward revealing how adaptive he can be, as well as who is in charge.

Chris Bosh wants the ball in the post. Actually, he wants the ball. But if he says he wants it in the post then it comes off as volunteering to provide an alternative scoring option, making the request more difficult to deny.

Dwyane Wade wants Eddie House and James Jones back in the rotation (and, therefore, by the process of elimination, Mike Miller out).

And LeBron James? He essentially is getting everything he wants: Domination of the offense, his preferred personnel, the right to downplay the regular season since only the playoffs matter to his legacy.

Wednesday, in the wake of the loss to the Portland Trail Blazers that extended the Heat’s losing streak to five and in advance of the Thursday visit by the Los Angeles Lakers that could extend it to six, Spoelstra succinctly said, “Less talk, more action.”

But what if the talk has substance? What if stationing Bosh in the post actually would provide a badly needed inside element? What if Miller is not up to a moment that Jones was up to earlier in the season and House has proven up to throughout his clutch-moments career?

With Spoelstra, as with his approach, the perspective at times can be unbending.

“I know this is helping us,” he said of the adversity. “If it extends too long, I know it is a case of diminishing returns.”

Adversity that provides lessons is one thing. Adversity that continues to produce Bosh jumpers, Miller misses and Mario Chalmers and Erick Dampier in the starting lineup is another.

What transpired following Tuesday’s game was good because it was candid, because it was raw. Bosh wants more. Wade wants different. As for LeBron? Well, he’s gotten everything he’s wanted, so he’s all for the status quo when it comes to approach.

What followed Wednesday was expected.

Bosh said it’s up to himself to take a more proactive approach.

“I don’t think I said anything bad,” he said after taking extra post drills. “I don’t blame anybody but myself.”

Wade said the rotation decisions should rest solely with Spoelstra.

“I’m not calling names out,” he said. “We just need more from everybody.”

What are your opinions.
