MANILA, Philippines – The owner of the Miami Heat has been fined $500,000 for posting tweets regarding the ongoing National Basketball Association (NBA) lockout, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Micky Arison, owner of the Heat, was fined for posting several comments on his Twitter account (@MickyArison) that violated the NBA’s policy of “censure on speaking publicly about the lockout,” said Yahoo! Sports‘ Adrian Wojnarowski.

Arison had responded to a comment calling NBA owners and players “greedy pigs,” saying “You are barking at the wrong owner.”

He deleted the tweets after some time, but league commissioner David Stern nevertheless fined him $500,000.

According to Wojnaroswki, the amount is one of the largest for an individual in the history of the league.

Arison becomes the second owner to be fined for speaking publicly regarding the lockout. Michael Jordan, owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, was also fined last September after making comments about the work stoppage.

No NBA official is allowed to make comments about the lockout, which has been in place since July 1.

According to Forbes, Arison is the owner of Carnival Cruises, the world’s largest cruise operator. As of 2010, his net worth is $4.4-billion, making him the 189th richest person in the world.

Not much else going on in the NBA world today.

At some point over the weekend, I said something to someone at NBC (can’t remember who) comparing the Eagles 1-2 start to the early-season struggles of the Miami Heat in 2010.

It’s surely something that others have pondered. The NBA’s collection of big names nearly won a league title after a sluggish start. And the Eagles are having a sluggish start.

But no one from the Eagles should be publicly making that comparison. Unfortunately for the Eagles, middle linebacker Jamar Chaney is.

“We’re getting tested right now, and as long as we stay strong we’re going to be all right,” Chaney said, per PhillySportsDaily.com. “The season ain’t over yet. We’re 1-2 right now. The Miami Heat started out the season 8-8 and everybody was jumping on them like it was the end of the world, and they ended up making it all the way to the Finals. It’s not the end of the world.”

Of course, a 1-2 start in an NFL season projects to something more like 4-8 (or maybe 6-12) than 8-8 in an 82-game basketball season. Either way, the last thing the Eagles should be doing is comparing themselves to the Heat or any other amalgamation of great players that ultimately failed.

Wait, maybe they should be comparing themselves to the Heat.

That’s all for today.

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade recently took to Twitter to say that he was looking for a job during the NBA lockout. While Wade is used to making bucket after bucket on the court, a new job offer may have him dealing with making a new type of bucket.

KFC said in an open letter to Wade, “it goes without saying we’d love to have you back on our team dishing out the World’s Best Chicken, like you dish out assists on the court.”

Of course being associated with something with chicken in the name may be a bit much for an athlete.

KFC’s proposal for Wade: “Come serve as an honorary captain at a local KFC drive-thru window. And while we can’t match your most recent salary, we’ll honor your KFC service by making a donation in your name to Colonel’s Scholars, a charity providing young people with much needed scholarships.”

KFC said they have “some pretty cool uniforms” and that if Wade makes a KFC-team comeback, the restaurant may share some of Colonel Sanders’ secrets to making buckets with the Heat star.

If it’s about making buckets, perhaps the entire Heat team should go in for a few lessons!

KFC said it’s keeping a headset waiting for D-Wade. So far, Wade’s camp hasn’t responded to the finger-licking good offer.

There is the quick update of the day.

MAINLY due to coach Erik Spoelstra, a Fil-Am, Pinoy cage buffs favor the Miami Heat to prevail over the Dallas Mavericks in their best-of-seven NBA title showdown that starts on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

Majority of 50 respondents polled by Malaya Business Insight, led by former senator Robert Jaworski, said the Heat would prevail, simply because it’s Spoelstra calling the shots.

Jaworski said the Heat should win if only to prove to the world that Filipinos are a force to reckon with, like boxing star Manny Pacquiao.

“I hope they (Heat) win because of their Fil-Am coach,” said Jaworski, who recalled “Spoelstra exuded humility when we first met.

“Humility is one of the better traits any human being must possess,” added Jaworski, a many-time champion coach in the PBA who also led the all-pro national team to a silver medal in the 1990 Beijing Asian Games.

“But if they (Heat) want to win, they must understand that beyond money and pain, hard work and prayer, at the end of the day, have always been a winning combination,” he stressed.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas chairman Ricky Vargas, who represents grand slam-seeking Talk N Text in the PBA Board, expressed the same sentiments, saying by having a Fil-Am, “Miami has attachment to Filipinos, whose passion for basketball is beyond any country in the world.

“The only reason I choose Miami is because of coach Spo, who I’ve had a chance to have dinner with when he visited Manila. He is a Filipino, so it’s rather personal than technical,” said Vargas.

Another PBA governor, JB Baylon, who represents Coca Cola, said his mind is for Dallas but his heart is for Miami due to Spoelstra, the first Filipino and Asian to coach in the world’s premier pro-basketball league. Spoelstra’s mother, Elisa (nee Celino), hails from San Pablo City, Laguna.

“I want Miami to win only because I want the coach to be able to make history (for the Philippines) in some way,” said Baylon, before quickly adding: “I think Dallas, in the end, will emerge victor because they look destined (to become champion) from the start.”

Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman, who is handling the Philippine team set to compete in the FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifying tournament in September in China, wants the Heat to regain the crown they first won in 2006. He stressed, however, the best-of-seen title series is evenly matched, with no team enjoying a clear advantage.

“The slight advantage of Dallas is a deeper bench with Dirk (Nowitzki), who for me is the top offensive player today, and Jason (Kidd), the finest point guard. And they should win on paper,” Toroman assessed. “But just the same, I also want Spoelstra to win because he is a Filipino.”

Philippine Sports Commission chief Richie Garcia, Bacolod City Mayor Bing Leonardia, PBA Press Corps president Tito Talao, Philippine Olympian Association head Art Macapagal, former RFM Corp. team manager Elmer Yanga, US–based former Toyota mainstay Abe King, and four-time PBA MVP Alvin Paxtrimonio have also expressed their preference for Miami due to to Spoelstra’s presence on the bench.

Leonardia believes the Heat’s LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh are “three-headed monsters” that Nowitzk cannot handle alone, while Talao, who writes for Tempo, thinks Miami’s firepower provided by the “Big Three” can prove a formidable advantage.

“For coach Spoelstra, the first Filipino to coach an NBA team and become, too, the first to romp off with a championship would certainly make us all Filipinos proud,” said King, dubbed as the “chairman of the board” during his playing days due to his rebounding prowess.
